Faro is built on a promontory and overlooks the Algarve. In spite of an earthquake which partly destroyed the city in 1755, it still has some interesting Moorish and Roman remains. The unusual church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo houses the bones of more than 1200 monks. Other must-see sites include the natural park of Ria Formosa, less than 10 kilometres (6 miles) from the city, and Castro Marim natural reserve, forty or so kilometres (approx. 25 miles) away.
